Howie Paints New Mural In Delray Beach, FL
12/20/08: On a recent visit to sunny Florida Howie took the opportunity to create a new mural at the Mellow Mushroom (On Fed. Highway 1) in downtown Delray Beach. The mural depicts Mellow's character Mel and the Fun Guys as rock stars on a stage at the Atlantic Ave. Cavern - named after the Club that the Beatles made famous in Liverpool, England. The mural is located on the outdoor patio so if you're in the neighborhood drive on by and take a look.

The paintings are commissioned by Live Nation during the live music season for entertainers and bands that play at the Bank of America Pavilion located overlooking Boston Harbor. The venue hosts the top of the line touring acts every summer including Ringo Starr, Elvis Costello, Cyndi Lauper, and many more who all were featured in the auction through paintings done by Boston area artists. Janis Joplin Homestead mural project includes one of Howie's album cover paintings
11/10/08: James Rougeau lives in the Port Arthur, TX childhood home of Janis Joplin and is creating a tribute mural project on the property. James bought one of Howie's album cover paintings of Janis' Live in Concert album that he is going to have enlarged to 5 feet square to be included in the mural and created an online video of himself opening Howie's painting package and talking about the mural project - click here to view. It looks like the town that once rejected the wild girl has embraced the legend.

Howie said "I'm am very happy about my painting being used in a mural that is a tribute to Janis and escpecially since it is going to be on the site of her family home. I adored Janis and her music has been a joyous part of the soundtrack of my life."

Our favorite Janis memory though comes from the Rosanne TV show. Rosanne, also a huge Janis fan, was attending the funeral of a friend on an episode and after she paid her tribute at the casket she started to walk away and then went back and said to the deceased person "Hey if you should run into Janis up there say Hi for me."

Howie meets Pop Art Superstar Steve Kaufman
9/6/08: From Howie - "In the middle of August my friends Tom and Anita called me and asked if I wanted to join them on a jaunt to Providence, RI and go gallery hoping and visit a museum or two. It was a nice day and I thought it sounded like fun so off we went... totally random and totally off the cuff. I love Providence and encourage everyone to visit it as often as possible. It's a great city and you can pretty much park anywhere.

After finding a couple closed galleries, visiting the R.I.S.D. museum and having a yummy lunch at Johnny Rockets up on Thayer Ave., we were meandering around town and ended up stopping at an Italian festival in a park we just happend to be driving past. We walked around for a bit and then I came around a corner and saw, much to my surprise, Steve Kaufman, Pop Art Superstar sitting there by himself looking a bit forlorn and out of place. I was literally stopped in my tracks because Steve is one of my favorite arists and I own 20 and counting of his paintings - and, to add to the total randomness I had just purchased one of Steve's paintings the day before.

I introduced myself and we had a delightful visit with Steve. If you have never met Steve then go out of your way to do so because he's a very funny and charming guy. Steve was at the festival as one of the guests of honor (his mother is Italian). Had I not just purchased the painting I would have picked up serveral of the pieces that Steve had on display. I was particulalry taken with one of his Rat Pack Las Vegas pieces and had to stop myself from buying it... of course now I realize I should have bought it anyway - dumb dumb dumb. I could have had a photo of me and Steve and art. OY!

As part of the Festival Steve was having a show of his work at the new Renaissance Hotel so we went there too and Tom purchased Steve's Frank Sinatra piece that you can see in the photos below. We got to spend more time chatting and hanging out with Steve who should be on everyone's "must meet" list of celebrity folks. I want to thank Steve again for being such a great host and for being a genuinely fabulous fellow." - Howie Green

Howie and Sun Life Financial Volunteers Paint
Pop Art Murals For Boston's Dimock Center

Boston Globe photographer Bill Brett's photo as featured in the newspaper's Lifestyle Section

8/17/08: Back in July Howie was asked by the good folks at Sun Life Financial in Wellesley, MA to created a set of murals for the Dimock Center in Boston. Howie jumped at the chance to do a home town project and was even more delighted to join the project when he discovered that the mural was located at ground level with no death-defying scaffolds or ladders required!

For two days Howie was joined by Michelle Van Leer's Sun Life team of volunteers who weilded brushes and paint to help create a series of pop art murals including the 72' x 7 1/2' mural in the photo plus an 8' square rainbow, two kid's bathroom murals and wall graphics for refurbished dance recital room. And he's going back in September to do 2 more smaller murals just for fun!

Howie's Bruce Springsteen album cover painting
helps raise money for Jacksonville, FL food bank

9/6/08: Howie donated a painting of Bruce Springsteen's "Born To Run" album cover to an auction in Jacksonville, Florida to help raise money for the Second Harvest Food Bank. We just got this letter from the event's director, Jim Schoettler:

Howie,
Due to battling Tropical Storm Fay and a few other issues, I'm just now finding the time to let you know about the Springsteen party & Second Harvest Food Bank raffle that you contributed your work toward.

About 300 people showed up for what was a wonderful night of fun and friendship and the raffle to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank raised nearly $2,700. People loved all the offerings and it really was the topper to a fantastic evening.

Thanks again for your help. I'm sure Bruce would be proud.
Take care,
Jim Schoettler

Howie's Cow Parade "Flower Cow" now available as collectible jewel box

8/16/08: We just stumbled across the news that Howie's Flower Cow - one of the three cows he painted for the 2006 Cow Parade Boston Event - is now available as a collectible jewel box. As seen in the photo the cow is a simplified version of the cow Howie painted and it has to be because it's a very small hand crafted metal box encrusted with three dimensional flowers and tiny jewels. The Flower Cow is available from various vendors on Ebay and the little guys are expensive ($40) due to the extensive production process and all the hand work involved. We're so proud to see the members of our little heard of cattle being made into collectible stuff - it's pop art at it's finest... and silliest. Click here to see lots more photos of Howie's 2006 Cow Parade Boston Cows... and welcome to the Department of Redundency Department.

Howie Green's Poker Cow now available in Europe
as Best-Selling Collectible Ceramic Figure

3/24/08: Although not yet available in the US (who knows why?) Howie's 2006 Cow Parade "Poker Cow" is now available in the rest of the world as a collectible ceramic figure. Fulfilling one of Howie's lifelong dreams to be able to have his art reproduced as a collectible figure to gathering dust on shelves around the globe, the Poker Cow (renamed "Moovin' All In" for some reason), is available through out Europe including the Netherlands where it is listed as the #2 best seller -- which is lovely because Howie's heritage is 98% Dutch.

Seems that the infamous paintings of dogs playing poker done as cigar advertisements in 1903 by C. M. Coolidge are a running joke to Europeans as the heights of American cultural achievement and Howie's satirical cow version seems to have struck a collective chord or two in the European funny bones.

After he stopped giggling Howie's response to all this was "I'm going to get a t-shirt made that says I'M BIG IN EUROPE!"

If anyone in Europe finds the Poker Cow in a gift shop Howie would love to know and he will gladly reimburse you to purchase one and ship it to us so it can gather dust on our shelves as well.

Howie paints image art for Fonzworth Bentley - MTV's latest Reality TV Star - rapper, fashion guru, author and Mr. Style

7/28/08: Last year Howie painted artwork that is being used to promote Hip Hop Rapper, Entertainer, Fashion Guru and former P. Diddy personal assistant Fonzworth Bentley. The theme was "Colors" and hey, who's better at colors than Howie? One of the pieces of art that Howie painted for Fonzworth (seen below) features the silhoutte of Mr. Bentley and his ever-present umbrella. If you have not seen Fonzworth's TV show "From G's To Gents" he is basically taking a bunch of hip hop studs and trying to turn them into gentlemen... yea and lots of luck with that effort!

Howie's Pop Art Pirate Painting Graces the Cover
of the Harbor High School 2008 Yearbook

6/5/08: Way back in the Fall of last year teach Margaret Rummens of Harbor High School in Santa Cruz, CA contacted Howie and asked if her yearbook team might use one of Howie's paintings for their cover. When Howie heard the school's mascot was a pirate he decided to do a whole new painting that the school used for a wrap around cover with a parrot on the back. The yearbooks were finally released this week and Ms. Rummens forwarded us this photo of her surprise table she prepared for the kids who worked on the books.

Along with the photo Howie got this nice note -- "I cannot thank you enough for all that you have done to make this such a special year for us. You have made an impact on my students that will last a lifetime. Thank you for being so generous with your time and talent." - Margaret Rummens

Thank you Margaret and Harbor High for thinking of us and we tip our hats in congratulations to this years graduating class. It's cool to know that a piece of Howie's artwork will be one of the mileposts in your high school careers!

Mamboland Rises in Connecticut School

6/2/08: Howie gets asked regularly to participate in various projects with schools around the country and he is always open to joining in the fun. A young lady named Quinn from a Croton, Connecticut school asked Howie to answer a series of interview questions she used Howie's answers and his Mamboland art in a presentation to her class. She also built her own version of Howie's Mamboland, complete with Jazz Fish and Noodle that is pictured here. Howie was amazed at the results and honored that Quin had gone to all the work to build her own mini Mamboland scene. Thanks to Quinn and special thanks to Quinn's teacher Melissa Bloomrose for her inspiration and for sending along the photo.

Howie Participates in Dover Mills Arts Collaborative First Annual Arts Festival in Dover, NH

5/12/08: When Howie was in school way back when he and his friends spent most summer weekends exhibiting their work in the many outdoor art shows and festivals in western New York State. Later on Howie's mom even got into the swing of things and for several years produced a large show on Conesus Lake, one of New York's beautiful "Finger Lakes."

For the first time in several decades Howie participated in one such show to launch a new arts initiative in Dover, NH. The Dover Mills Arts Collaborative hosted their First Annual Festival which featured over 30 artists, dancers, musicians and some yummy food. Howie said the although it had been a long time since he had particiapted in such an event not much has changed. "It's still a great way to show your work, get immediate reaction, meet some nice folks and sell few things" says Howie. The festival brought a lot of people to the Mills buildings which will soon be the home to a premanant gallery featuring New Hampshire artists and the new New Hampshire Children's Museum.
